TV1 has reported claims that some immigrants are becoming involved in insurance fraud schemes costing insurers millions of dollars. The New Zealand Insurance Council is investigating frauds allegedly carried out by migrants from the Middle East. The fraudsters buy old cars, insure them heavily and then have them crashed to claim the insurance.

Chris Ryan of the Insurance Council said, “New immigrants are importing very clever fraud schemes from overseas and believing they can plant them into our economy.”
