During 2007, 5,500 more people arrived in New Zealand permanently or long-term than departed.
New Zealand gained people from a majority of countries but lost people to Australia - with the biggest net outflow of New Zealanders since 1988.
The United Kingdom was NZ’s most significant source country for population gain followed by India and the Philippines.
The UK has been New Zealand’s single biggest source of migrants since 2004 when changes to English language requirements and restrictions on workers from “non-equivalent” labour markets decreased the number of arrivals from China and India.
